08 — Flipfox
Drawing Flip
Four versions of a fox. How Flipfox's mascot went from generic vector to gouache to sticker, why a sticker sheet kept coming back as a grid, and how a still fox learned to breathe.

Flip has been redrawn four times. Version one was a generic flat vector fox, rejected. Version two leaned into a painterly, almost gouache look and was rejected for being too three-dimensional. Version three was flat and friendly and shipped for a while. Version four, the current Flip 3.0, arrived on the seventh of September after the owner brought in a Duolingo Duo sticker sheet as the reference: bold flat vector, thin dark-brown outlines, enormous expressive eyes, and the teal bumbag that is now his signature.

Twelve poses, one hero
The poses are generated from a single hero image with an image model, each on a solid green background that is keyed out afterwards. The lesson that cost the most time is a small one: if you show the model the multi-pose sheet as a reference, it hands you back a three-by-three grid every time. The prompt now references only the single hero and says, in so many words, not a sticker sheet, not a grid. The app icon is rebuilt from the same source when the mascot changes.
A fox that moves
On Home, in onboarding, on the sale celebration and in the profile header, Flip is not a still. Six short loops, idle, hello, cheer, spot, rich and box, were animated from the keyed poses composited onto the app's cream, then played back muted and feather-masked so the edge disappears into the background. Where the loop is missing, the still gets procedural breathing and sway. Tap him and you get a haptic, a squash bounce, a flash of a different pose and a quip that Home routes into his speech bubble. Reduce Motion is respected throughout.
Always reference the single hero and say: not a sticker sheet, not a grid.

The voice
The promo film is 46 seconds, nine scenes, narrated in a British voice generated per scene and used to time the cut, so the picture waits for the sentence rather than the other way round. It plays on the landing page with a poster card that says watch how Flipfox works. The feature cards under it are real app screenshots, borderless in a phone frame, after the boxed version was rejected. Every screenshot has to be recaptured when the interface changes, and the home shot must say Den Check.
